The Mediterranean diet is a nourishing way of eating based on traditional patterns from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It emphasizes plenty of plant-focused foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, with healthy fats—especially extra-virgin olive oil—playing a central role. Moderate portions of fish and seafood, along with small amounts of poultry, eggs, and dairy, complement the diet, while red and processed meats, refined sugars, and highly processed foods are kept to a minimum. This approach is more about enjoying wholesome, balanced meals than strict rules or calorie counting, and encourages meals that are flavorful, satisfying, and grounded in whole foods. Research shows that this style of eating supports heart health, steady energy, and overall wellbeing when embraced as a long-term pattern rather than a short-term “diet.”

Spiritual virtues to remember

Neshama web icons-Simplicity

Simplicity

1. Freedom from Materialism: “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Luk 12:15 Also Ecc 5:10 & Mat 6:19–21.
2. Trust in God’s Provision: “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’…or ‘What shall we wear?’… seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Mat 6:31–33 & Phi 4:19.
3. Generosity & Sharing with Others: “…those who are rich…not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches…Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share.” 1 Tim 6:17–18 & Act 4:32.
4. Contentment & Peace in Simplicity: “Now godliness with contentment is great gain…having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.” 1 Tim 6:6–8 & Heb 13:5.

Simplicity is a way of living that frees us from excess and helps us focus on what truly matters. It calls us to let go of the constant need for more and resist the values of a world which is obsessed with wealth, status, and greedily heaping up possessions. Chasing after these things lead only to pride, greed, and anxiety. True simplicity trusts God to provide and sees every gift as something to be used wisely and shared generously. It’s not about poverty, but about intentionally living with purpose – owning only what is needed. Simplicity teaches contentment, protects us from materialism, keeps our hearts focused on God and our future heavenly home.

Moderation

1. Moderation in Eating & Fasting: “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful…I will not be brought under the power of any.” 1 Cor 6:12 Also Phi 3:19, Mat 6:17–18 & Pro 23:20–21.
2. Clothing and Appearance: “Do not let your adornment be merely outward…rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit…” 1 Pet 3:3–4 & 1 Tim 2:9–10
3. Possessions: “…godliness with contentment is great gain…having food and clothing…be content.” 1 Tim 6:6–8 and “…neither poverty nor riches…Lest I…deny You…” Pro 30:8–9 Also Mat 6:24, Heb 13:5.
4. General Moderation and Self-Control: “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.” Pro 25:28 Also Tit 2:11–12 & Gal 5:22–23.

Moderation helps us keep our desires, habits, and choices within godly limits, reflecting self-control in how we eat, dress, spend, and live. Food is for nourishing the body, not an addictive obsession causing harm. Fasting (various types) helps us quieten our flesh, resetting our taste buds and refocuses our mind on God. It reminds us that true satisfaction comes from Him. Clothing is kept in its proper place of being a covering for the body without seeking attention as true beauty is inward, not based on appearance. Everything from food, fashion to money should be in its rightful place of necessity, aiding us to honour God and live for Him.
